Waterproofing

Fix the Water Before You Finish the Basement

A finished basement only lasts when drainage, grading, and exterior pressure are handled before the drywall goes up.

01

Start outside, not at the paint line

Most basement water problems leave evidence inside, but the pressure often starts outside the wall. Before a basement is finished, the exterior grade, downspouts, soil contact, cracks, and drainage path should be reviewed together.

02

Do not hide an active leak

New flooring, studs, insulation, and drywall can make a damp basement look complete for a short time. If the source is still active, moisture comes back behind the finish work and the repair becomes more expensive.

03

Quote the problem as a system

A useful waterproofing estimate should explain what is being opened, what is being sealed, how water will move away, and how the site will be closed back up. That gives the homeowner a real basis for comparing bids.
